Tubers

There are two types of Tuber, stem tubers of which a potato is an example and root tubers of which the sweet potato and Jerusalem Artichoke are examples.

The stem tubers are the means by which the plant reproduces.  The parent plant will be formed from a tuber and it will develop further stem tubers as it grows during the season.  When the plant dies at the end of the season the new stem tubers will remain dormant until growing conditions are right and each stem tuber will then form a new plant.

The root tubers are simply food stores which are built up during the growing season to enable the plant to survive during the winter months.
